Adieu, Barbaro

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

KENNETT SQUARE, Pa. (AP) — Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday after complications from his gruesome breakdown at last year’s Preakness, ending an eight-month ordeal that prompted an outpouring of support across the country.

Barbaro_profile_1   “We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain,” co-owner Roy Jackson said. “It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time.” A series of ailments, including laminitis in the left rear hoof and a recent abscess in the right rear hoof, proved too much for the gallant colt.

Barbaro battled in his ICU stall for eight months. The 4-year-old colt underwent several procedures and was fitted with fiberglass casts. He spent time in a sling to ease pressure on his legs, had pins inserted and was fitted at the end with an external brace. These were all extraordinary measures for a horse with such injuries.

Roy and Gretchen Jackson were with Barbaro on Monday morning, with the owners making the decision in consultation with chief surgeon Dr. Dean Richardson.

“I would say thank you for everything, and all your thoughts and prayers over the last eight months or so,” Jackson said to Barbaro’s fans.

The news that Barbaro had been euthanized first was reported on the Thoroughbred Times Web site.

On May 20, Barbaro was rushed to the New Bolton Center, about 30 miles from Philadelphia in Kennett Square, hours after shattering his right hind leg just a few strides into the Preakness Stakes.

Barbaro_surgery The bay colt underwent a five-hour operation that fused two joints, recovering from an injury most horses never survive. But Barbaro never regained his natural gait.

“We loved him. He was great,” said Peter Brette, Barbaro’s exercise rider and assistant trainer for Michael Matz. “He did everything we ever asked of him. He could have been one of the best. What a fighter he was.”

Barbaro suffered a significant setback over the weekend, and surgery was required to insert two steel pins in a bone — one of three shattered in the Preakness but now healthy — to eliminate all weight bearing on the ailing right rear foot.

The procedure Saturday was a risky one, because it transferred more weight to the leg while the foot rests on the ground bearing no weight. The leg was on the mend until the abscess began causing discomfort last week. Until then, the major concern was Barbaro’s left rear leg, which developed laminitis in July, and 80 percent of the hoof was removed.

Richardson said Monday morning that Barbaro did not have a good night.

Barbaro1_2 “This horse was a hero,” said David Switzer, executive director of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Association. “His owners went above and beyond the call of duty to save this horse. It’s an unfortunate situation, but I think they did the right thing in putting him down.”

Brilliant on the race track, Barbaro always will be remembered for his brave fight for survival. The story of the beloved 4-year-old bay colt’s fight for life captured the fancy of millions.

Barbaro_hurt_1 When Barbaro broke down, his right hind leg flared out awkwardly as jockey Edgar Prado (below and right) jumped off and tried to steady the ailing horse. Race fans at Pimlico wept. Within 24 hours the entire nation seemed to be caught up in a “Barbaro watch,” waiting for any news.

Barbaro_prado_1  Well-wishers young and old showed up at the New Bolton Center with cards, flowers, gifts, goodies and even religious medals for the champ, and thousands of e-mails poured into the hospital’s Web site just for him.

Barbaro4_1 “I just can’t explain why everyone is so caught up in this horse,” Roy Jackson, who owned the colt with his wife, Gretchen, has said time and again. “Everything is so negative now in the world, people love animals and I think they just happen to latch onto him.” Devoted fans even wrote Christmas carols for him, sent a wreath made of baby organic carrots and gave him a Christmas stocking.

Barbaro_pool The biggest gift has been the $1.2 million raised since early June for the Barbaro Fund. The money is put toward needed equipment such as an operating room table, and a raft and sling for the same pool recovery Barbaro used after his surgeries.

The Jacksons spent tens of thousands of dollars hoping the best horse they ever owned would recover and be able to live a comfortable life on the farm — whether he was able to breed or not.

The couple, who own about 70 racehorses, broodmares and yearlings, and operate the 190-acre Lael Farm, have been in the horse business for 30 years, and never had a horse like Barbaro.

Barbara_with_richardsion As the days passed, it seemed Barbaro would get his happy ending. As late as December, with the broken bones in his right hind leg nearly healed and his laminitis under control, Barbaro was looking good and relishing daily walks outside his intensive care unit.

But after months of upbeat progress reports, including talk that he might be headed home soon, news came Jan. 10 of a serious setback because of the laminitis. Richardson (above) had to remove damaged tissue from Barbaro’s left hind hoof, and the colt was placed back in a protective sling. On Jan. 13, another section of his left rear hoof was removed.

After Barbaro developed a deep abscess in his right hind foot, surgery was performed Saturday to insert two steel pins in a bone. This after Richardson warned last December that Barbaro’s right hind leg was getting stronger and that the left hind foot was a “more formidable long-term challenge.”

Barbaro_ky_2_1 Even before the injury that ended his career, Barbaro had earned his fame for simply being a magnificent racehorse. Foaled and raised at Sanborn Chase at Springmint Farm near Nicholasville, Ky., breeder Bill
Sanborn fought back tears Monday as he talked about “the privilege” of working with the colt.

“Everything was looking really, really good, and of course I honestly thought that the horse was going to pull it off,” he said. “It just wasn’t meant to be. It didn’t surprise me that he fought so long. He was a great horse.”

La Ville Rouge, Barbaro’s broodmare, remains pregnant at Mills
Ridge Farm in Lexington with a full brother to Barbaro. The foal is expected to be born sometime in the early spring, according to farm spokesperson Kimberly Poulin.

A son of Dynaformer, out of the dam La Ville Rouge, Barbaro started his career on the turf, but Matz knew he would have to try his versatile colt on the dirt. He reasoned that if he had a talented 3-year-old in America, he’d have to find out early if his horse was good enough for the Triple Crown races.

Barbaro was good enough, all right. He won his first three races on turf with authority, including the Laurel Futurity by eight lengths and the Tropical Park Derby by 3 3/4 lengths.

That’s when Matz drew up an unconventional plan for a dirt campaign that spaced out Barbaro’s race to keep him fit for the entire Triple Crown, a grueling ordeal of three races in five weeks at varying distances over different tracks.

Barbaro won the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Feb. 4, but his dirt debut was inconclusive since it came over a sloppy track. After an eight-week break, an unusually long time between races, Barbaro came back and won the Florida Derby by a half-length over Sharp Humor despite an outside No. 10 post.

The deal was sealed — on to the Derby, but not without criticism that Barbaro couldn’t win coming off a five-week layoff. After all, it had been 50 years since Needles won the Derby off a similar break. But Matz was unfazed, and stuck to his plan, saying all the time he was doing what was best for the horse.

Barbaro_ky_derby Not only did Barbaro win the Derby, he demolished what was supposed to be one of the toughest fields in years. The 6 1/2-length winning margin was the largest since 1946, when Assault won by eight lengths and went on to sweep the Triple Crown.

Barbaro2 The 55-year-old Matz (far right), meanwhile, was living a charmed life. Before turning to thoroughbreds eight years ago, he was an international show jumping star, and a three-time Olympian and silver medal winner who carried the U.S. flag at the closing ceremony at the 1996 Atlanta Games. He also survived a plane crash in Iowa in 1989 and became a hero by saving three children from the burning wreckage. The crash killed 112 of the 296 people on board United Flight 232.

In Barbaro, Matz truly believed he was training a Triple Crown winner. He often said Barbaro was good enough to be ranked among the greats and join Seattle Slew as the only unbeaten Triple Crown champions.

But two weeks later after the Derby Barbaro took a horrible misstep and one of the most extraordinary attempts to save a thoroughbred was under way. The injury was considered to be so disastrous that many thought the horse would be euthanized while still at Pimlico Race Track.

Instead, Barbaro was transported that night to the New Bolton Center’s George D. Widener Hospital for Large Animals and was operated on the next day by Richardson.

Barbaro_xray The injuries were as serious as everyone feared: Barbaro sustained a broken cannon bone above the ankle, a broken sesamoid bone behind the ankle and a broken long pastern bone below the ankle. The fetlock joint — the ankle — was dislocated. Richardson said the pastern bone was shattered in “20-plus pieces.” Barbaro, who earned $2,302,200 with his six wins in seven starts, endured the complicated five-hour surgery in which Richardson inserted a titanium plate and 27 screws into the broken bones. After calmly awakening from anesthesia, he “practically jogged
back to his stall” looking for something to eat.

At the time, Richardson stressed Barbaro still had many hurdles to clear, and called chances for a full recovery a “coin toss.” Afterward, though, things went relatively smoothly. Each day brought more optimism: Barbaro was eyeing the mares, nickering, gobbling up his feed and trying to walk out of his stall. There was great hope Barbaro somehow would overcome the odds and live a life of leisure on the farm.

But by mid-July, Richardson’s greatest fear became reality — laminitis struck Barbaro’s left hind leg and 80 percent of the hoof was removed. Richardson recalled recently what it was like when he met with the Jacksons, and Matz, and his wife, D.D., to deliver the news.

“It was terrible,” Richardson said. “I wouldn’t have blamed anyone at that point for saying they just couldn’t face the prospects of going on.” But Barbaro responded well to treatment, and his recovery was progressing until a final, fatal turn.

Barbaro, how do we take this all in? How do we say goodbye to such magnificence and courage?

As you slip beyond the clouds of memory,
Know this final gift has cost my heart.
No greater loss, no misery, no tragedy
Could pierce my soul with depth no words can chart.

You lived to love, and gave us pure devotion,
No less devotion can I then return
Though thinking of you now brings mixed emotions,
And causes tears of grief to form and burn.

My prince, my true companion in adventures,
I set you free to soar on winds of change.
I cannot hold you back, nor can I censure
The pain that carves a scar which will remain.

Forever, love, run free of pain and sorrow,
I'll dream of you each night for all my years.
And if my end should come next year, tomorrow
I'll run to meet you, blinded by my tears.

As you slip beyond the clouds of memory,
Look back once so that you may remember me...

I AM SO, SO SORRY BARBARO.....I AM SORRY FOR ALL OF YOUR PAIN, YOU DESERVED SO MUCH BETTER.

You are free, you are in God's loving care. Run free, like the wind, and I will never forget all you suffered and for what, I don't know. We will meet at the Rainbow Bridge one day....the pain is over...

WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY????????????

I can just now begin to think straight since about 9AM when I caught wind of this.

Barbaro's owners are also to be commended- they did put him in danger by racing him but when the worst happened they fought for his life- but only until it hurt him too much. They could have continued even now, for the money he could have made them as a stud, but they didn't. They will be remembered as the models of responsible owners, whether one accepts horse racing as a reasonable thing to do or not or not. They, the Jacksons, have also lead the fight against horse slaughter and I am hoping some of this energy will carry over to that. That MUST end and Barbaro may be remembered as the final push that made it happen. It is very, very close to happening. Of course that doesn't end it in the rest of the world and there will be people who find ways around it, but the writing is on the wall here and thousands of ordinary horses will be saved as a result. Contact your Senators now, in honor of the great Barbaro. It is bill S1915.

In addition New Bolton center has raised 1.5 million for laminitis research as a result of Barbaro. My ordinary horse almost died 10 years before his time because of it and eventually did die from navicular disease in his old age, which is also a disease of the foot. Like Vivi, the regal Barbaro helped untold numbers of ordinary horses because of his own bravery and perseverence. More than anything he will be remembered for that.

Alex on the Barbaro blog, Denise and Vivi's counterpart, said it better: Update 1407:
It's 4:25pm, the press conference has just wrapped up. It'll take me a little bit of time to write up the details of the conference but no doubt it'll be reported upon heavily. My initial thoughts are that the three people addressing the press conference, Dr. Richardson and Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, were clearly devestated by this turn of events. There were times during some of Dr. Richardson's responses that you could tell it was tough for him to maintain his composure. It was nice to hear from both Mr. and Mrs. Jackson acknowledging the support that they have received throughout this entire experience...whether it's been the devotion of Dr. Richardson and his staff, Michael Matz, Peter Brette, or the public at large. Their overwhelming hope appears to be that the positive good that Barbaro represents and has highlighted becomes his enduring legacy. It was also nice to see Mr. Jackson acknowledge not only the developments in veterinary medicine that will come out of this episode but the heightened focus on anti-horse slaughter issues and issues of backstretch workers etc. I'll add a further update with regards to the press conference shortly.

Very well said Karen, God Speed to Barbaro, he will be one of the most beautiful horses at the Bridge. Maybe he can get a good game going with the ones that have gone on before him this year. He fought such a heroic battle, it is so sad that he lost.
Keeping the faith for Vivi in Texas. It is her turn to be found.

GOD SPEED TO BARBARO, A BEAUTIFUL HORSE WITH TONS OF COURAGE. HIS HUMAN FAMILY DESERVES A ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR MAKING SUCH A TOUGH DECISION.
MAY HE FIND PEACE AND COMFORT AT THE RAINBOW BRIDGE WITH THE OTHERS THAT PASSED BEFORE HIM.

WE WILL NEVER FORGET YOU FRIEND.

I've been reading the comments on the Tim Woolley racing site and I can't help but see a similarity between then and us here on the Vivi blog - Barbaro is now physically gone and they are grieving not only for that but for the fact that their blog family will now disband. Is that what will happen to us when the Vivi search is over? Tis bad enough to lose what that common thread but then to lose the family that goes with it is even more devastating.

Now that the pain is gone, May Barbaro run free with all his friends at the Rainbow Bridge.

Kathy, I hope they continue to work for horse issues. The money they raised will go towards wonderful equipment for Bolten plus for research to help treat laminitis. Their work is not over and neither will ours when Vivi is found. Animals will need us to stand up for their rights.

KATHY IN COLORADO--I hope we are not to be disbanded when Vivi is found. I'm sure we will continuing to keep in touch with each others. I bet the Barbaro fans will probably do the same except to help with many ideas of how to treat the terrible diseases the horses go through.
So I doubt we will be disbanded this blog because we are too strong to giving it up!!

Rest in Peace Barbaro. Your Mom and Dad Jackson are indeed a class act for they not only showed their deep love for you but were always gracious and appreciative to everyone who was involved in caring about you. With the skills of Dr. Richardson, they spared nothing to help you recover. You are now healed and pain free to gallop with the wind at your back.

What a crappy day it has been. Barbaro RIP, your
pain is gone, and you were loved by millions

Eternal Father, We bring to You Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, Dr. Richardson, and all who grieve the loss of Barbaro. We ask You to give them the courage to bear it. We bring you our thanks for Barbaro who lived and triumphed, among us and gave freely of his love, and courage. We commit our Barbaro into your loving hands. Give us eyes to see how your love embraces all creatures and every living thing speaks to us of your love. Amen.

As a priest chaplain (for greyhounds) often says on the loss of such a beautiful swift animal:

"BARBARO- RUN WITH THE WIND THAT IS GOD!"

PRAYERS AND CANDLES AT 8:30 EST. (Don't let our candles go below 1,000!-Keep up your hope. God lives in the praise of His people, and He can turn tragedy into triumph!)

I just lit over 100 candles to keep our numbers up-- will someone join me? Let's see where our numbers until 10:00. Meanwhile, keep the prayers and the light alive for Vivi.

Barbaro, now you can win all the races running on the edge of the rainbow!

Barbaro...

My trainer's (and friend's) horse Pia just passed in December of '06. I held Pia's head in my arms until she couldn't stand anymore and the vet removed me from her stall...

I KNOW that if you search for her dear Barbaro, Pia will take you to the lushest and greenest pastures and the cleanest and purest water that the "other side" has to offer.

God speed my four-legged friend. You are a hero in my eyes and your courage was an inspiration.

Tonight's Psalm is startlingly appropriate...
Psalm 31 (excerpts)
Be gracious to me, LORD, for I am in distress;
with grief my eyes are wasted,
my soul and body spent.
My life is worn out by sorrow,
my years by sighing.
My strength fails in affliction;
my bones are consumed.
But I trust in you, LORD;
I say, "You are my God."
My times are in your hands;
rescue me!"
Let your face shine on your servant;
save me in your kindness.
Do not let me be put to shame,
for I have called to you, LORD.
How great is your goodness, Lord,
stored up for those who fear you.
You display it for those who trust you,
in the sight of all the people.
Blessed be the LORD,
who has shown me wondrous love,
and been for me a city most secure.
Once I said in my anguish,
"I am shut out from your sight."
Yet you heard my plea,
when I cried out to you.
Love the LORD, all you faithful.
Be strong and take heart,
all you who hope in the LORD.

Father, Take the great horse Barbaro running into the wind that is You. Lead him into Your pastures. Comfort all who mourn his death, and let them take joy in the courage he showed, and the legacy he left. (Look at all the great things his foundation can do!)
Buoy our hope, and comfort us with a sighting and rescue of Vivi, and now Bailey the malamute. Help us find homes and help for the Afghan hounds who need us. Heal our sick ones, and guard and protect all the lost, and homeless people and animals who are out this winter night.

ODD REQUEST:

I know many of you are horse lovers or own horses so maybe you can throw out an idea or two. We need horse socks, long ones that would stay up. This is an old horse, he's plenty warm enough on the body with his blankets on but his legs are cold so we'd like to make something for him. If you can come up with an bright idea for a hat we can use
that to :-)

Hi Gail

Here is a quick idea I had. Get some polar fleece pieces, maybe scraps from a fabric store. You could get some velcro strips to hold them on. Use seam binding tape that irons on to hold the velcro strips to the fleece. OR just use some vet wrap to hold on the fleece. I'm sure you're familiar with vet wrap. I love the stuff.

Gail - could you take leggings (like what young girls used to wear) and alter them just a little for your old guy? Just a thought.
Keeping the faith for VIVI in TX

Thank you. Yes I'm familiar with vet wrap, used it to keep my springers ears from curling and for my sprained ankles and wrists :-)

Cherita, the problem will be in keeping them up without putting old man suspenders on him, lol

The following is a poem by Stanley Harrison
" Somewhere in time's own space,
there must be some sweet pastured place
where creeks sing on and tall trees grow.
Some paradise where horses go,
for by the love that guards my pen
I know great horses live again"
We hope this is a bit of comfort to the Jacksons, Dean Richardson, Michael and D.D, Matz and Mr.E.Prado. Rest well, beautiful soul....

Beautiful poem Sue and Mike, Thank you for sharing
it with us. I am still so sad over Barbaros death.
It is amazing how many millions of people this horse
touched with his bravery.

Run with the Wind

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - A Florida race track is honoring Barbaro by establishing a scholarship in his name.

Officials say the award will be worth at least $20,000 and will go to high school students planning to study veterinary medicine at the University of Florida.

By surviving as long as he did so much good was done. This would not have happened if he had been put down at Pimlico. Loved that NYT article on Dr. Dean R. Great press conference. thanks for passing that along

UPENN Vet School was always the best in the country. I was going to be a vet when I started Penn State many years ago but the chemistry did me in. It is very selective and can only accept so many. My friend's daughter-in-law goes there. She went to Penn undergraduate and had the highest science average ever for a woman, so the vet school grabbed her right away. Dr. Richardson went above and beyond and his skill and compassion should be a model for all vet students and practicing vets. I'm so proud of my hometown's school and that my son is graduating from Wharton this May. All the profs at Penn are class acts. Down to earth, not snobby, just the opposite of the image of Ive League Schools. Barbaro''s owners and the assistants at Bolten have shown dignity and class. May they find comfort in knowing that they did all that was humanly possible for Barbaro and that now he is at peace and running free with the great ones.

Here is a nice article about Barbaro.

"Barbaro was The Little Engine that Could"

http://www.capecodonline.com/cctimes/edits/cctblogs/sports/2007/01/barbaro_was_the_little_engine.htm

Vivi's story has so many parallels. If Barbaro had been put down at Pimlico there would not have been so much good done. I have been counting and so far Vivi has saved at least 56 other dogs and cats that would probably have died without her. And we know Vivi was still there in early December at the very least so she is SO the Little Engine that Could too. I believe she is still out there surviving and we are still looking for her. For me this will always be the year of Barbaro and Vivi.

We have to ban horse slaughterhouses in Barbaro's name.

IMPORTANT PRAYERS NEEDED:
I hate to be the bearer of more sad news but Valerie sent me an e-mail from Terrie (not Terri) that I couldn't ignore. Terrie was with us in the beginning days of the blog, and may have even been a searcher with the girls. Terrie drifted away a bit because her whippet Smit/Smitty was ill. Smitty's congestive heart failure has gotten the best of him (at age 13, I believe) and he is scheduled to cross the bridge at 8:30 PM this night -- at home because Terrie works for her vet.
When you are praying and lighting candles tonight for VIVI AT 8:30 PM EST, Don't forget Terrie and Smitty. I will set up a candle site if it hasn't been done.(Candle group Smitt)

I am copying this from the Tim Woolley site - if you would like to be a part of this, it is a greyt tribute to Barbaro. The Barbaro site has many wonderful people on it, just like Vivi's does - one of them thought of this $29 donation

IMPORTANT! EVERYONE PLEASE READ:

My heart is filled with gratitude and love that the $29 Movement in Honor of Barbaro is taking off with great success! Thank you so much.

For those who need more information .... here it is:

I posted last night a "challenge" to everyone to donate $29 to The Fund to Fight Laminitis at UPenn in honor and memory of Barbaro. Why $29? Because Bobby was born on April 29 and he was REBORN on January 29th, so that number becomes very significant to me.

So, for the price of a good lunch or inexpensive dinner ... for the price of a movie, popcorn, soda, etc.... for the price of a decent pair of shoes .... maybe! OR ...

TO SAVE THE LIFE OF A HORSE AND ETCH THE LEGACY OF BARBARO FOREVER, Donate $29 to The Fund to Fight Laminitis at UPenn:

http://www.vet.upenn.edu/giving/laminitisfund_shoe.htm

And, if you care to carry it farther, as I am, I will continue to donate $29 per month, each and every month on the 29th day of the month (excepting February, of course) to The Fund to Fight Laminitis in honor and memory of our Beloved Barbaro.

Please join this effort and let's raise enough money to slay the killer of Secretariat, Barbaro and so many other horses, and let's save their lives for the future.

Mr and Mrs. Jackson will be on Larry king's show tonite at 9 pm.along with Jack Hanna.

I can imagine Barbaro keeping company with Bold Ruffian at the Rainbow Bridge! Rest in peace, Barbaro, and then run like the wind again!

Kathy....Thank you for sharing this. I, too, will do as you do on a monthly basis. My heart goes out to Barbaro and his family.

As always, God Bless everyone for all the prayers for Cubby. Round three of chemo this Thursday and very anxious about the pre-chemo work-up. Labs, x-rays, etc.

Jackie, I just signed a candle "go find Ruffian"

Thanks for the donation information, I just sent the first $29.00 to the Barbaro Fund.
Keeping prayers and candles for all going here in TX

Just got this e-mail:

Many thanks Karen Va. for posting the link to the Cape Cod article on Barbaro entitled the Little Engine That Could. I have forwarded it to some of my friends in horses.
I found these quotes especially touching for they echoed my sentiments exactly about this truly magnificent animal:
"Like many athletes, he knew he was gifted. You could see it in his demeanor and in his eyes, and how he carried himself on the racetrack."
"In a time of pessimism and cynicism, he gave us hope. He won us over with his bravery and iron will. What he gave us was priceless – before and after his career-ending race. He was the little engine that could, and he was fortunate to have doctors, owners and a loving group of people in his corner who would move heaven and earth to help him."

Rest in peace dear Barbaro, your greatness and bravery has touched millions of people around the world and you will always live on in our hearts.

The question in are local paper for tomorrow is "How Should Barbaro be Remembered" the answers will be interesting to read. After all..he did win the Derby.

Terrie, we are with in thought and prayer as you take Smitty to the Bridge.

Lots of Candles to light and re-light...
Keep the light alive.

Terrie, You and Smitty will be in our prayers. Sending you many hugs and needlenose kisses. Love Rosa and Kramer, xoxoxo

I think someone said the Jacksons will be on Larry King live at 9- with I think it was Jack Hanna? I don't know that for sure but I think I heard that. Worth checking on.

oh duh, Margot about 5 posts up. sigh.
But they did just announce it on CNN...

Psalm 103:3
As the heavens tower over the earth,
so God's love towers over the faithful.
As far as the east is from the west,
so far have our sins been removed from us.
As a father has compassion on his children,
so the LORD has compassion on the faithful.
For he knows how we are formed,
remembers that we are dust.
Our days are like the grass;
like flowers of the field we blossom.
The wind sweeps over us and we are gone;
our place knows us no more.
But the LORD'S kindness is forever,
toward the faithful from age to age.
He favors the children's children
of those who keep his covenant,
who take care to fulfill its precepts.

Candles? http://www.gratefulness.org

Just lit some candles and Vivi has 1072, but lots of them are low and will burn out real soon. Please light a candle so we can keep her levels up to 1000 for as long as we can. They burn out faster than 48 hours seems to me.

Thanks....

Hopey has 42, they are burning quickly.

Hopey now has 65-- can somebody try to make it 100.
Terrie and Smitty have almost 70--thanks.(Smitt)

Under candles is it Smitt or Smity. They are both on there.

GI just received a call from the Pet Detective i used. He is on his way back up here to find Bailey. It seems that animal Planet has picked up the story and is coming along to do the story on Bailey and Buckley and the pet detective.
I appreciate all who have been helping in the search for her. she is a great pet and companion. i would hate for anything to happen too her.

Mark Stutzmann

PS animal planet is paying for the search and reward
OOD NEWS EVERYONE!

Barbaro has been cremated and the Jacksons are still deciding what or where with them. There are many things going on to honor Barbaro that are listed on the Tim Woolley comments site. That site is like ours used to be - constant chatter and reading. Some of the things being thought about are a garden with memory bench at NBC, a museum and the $29 laminitus movement.

I am happy to hear there will be more help in the search for Baily.
I wish Animal Planet would have done the same for Vivi at the time she needed help. This is great publicity it would have really helped out.
Vivi's story would be a wonderfull feature on Animal Planet. Have we tried contacting them, for something like this? I wonder if now would be a good time. Since it is approaching the 1 yr mark.
Maybe something was already tried with them and I just don't remember, thinking out loud.
does anyone know? Thanks Rosa

I just got done lighting some candles for Vivi. She had 1,030 but there are several that are going to be burning out before too long. Come on guys, let's keep it going at over 1,000!!!

Yes! because lighting fake candles on a website will make things happen! If it's not over 1000 candles vivi won't be found!!

It's done to help remind us that she still hasn't been found and that she's not forgotten.

Sure - would be nice to light you!

How does that even make sense? You're preaching to the converted--No one here needs "reminding". And right back atcha candlelighter.

I read an article about Barbaro yesterday. The article mentioned that the breeding that produced Barbaro had been repeated and a foal will be born later this spring. It also said they new the sex of the foal and they know it is a colt.

It will be interesting to see if the new baby will be anything like Barbaro. Being a dog breeder, I know repeat breedings usually have totally different results. My heart goes out to Barbaro and everyone who was involved with that great horse. I just can't stop thinking about him.....

Jodi - I'm also going to be interested to see how that new foal will turn out. I know it's not going to be Barbaro but it will be interesting to see if there are similarities. Oh, Sure - I wasn't preaching. Just saying what I felt as you have also done in the past.

Jodi - the Jackson's said last night that there is a full brother of Barbaro that is a yearling - not yet named and that Barbaro's mama is with foal (father is Barbaro's dad) that is due in the spring - this one is a colt also. Larry King asked if they would be named after Barbaro and Mr. J said that Barbaro was named from a painting that he has hanging in their home of 6 foxhounds that were in his family and Barbaro was the one furthest to the right that the colts would be named from the names on the picture like Barbaro was - that it brought them luck once.

Sure - if we are such loosers - why do you even bother to be on this site - why don't you go elsewhere and disrupt

Hi Pam

I noticed you live in MN, I live there too! Rarely have I posted, but I have followed the Vivi saga since she went missing. Whippets are my breed and I just love them!

Kathy - did he mention what the other names of the foxhounds were?

Hi Jodi - do you live in the southern part of the state or the northern part?

Pam I live just south of the TC's.

I'm in the opposite direction from you. Way up North. Do you breed and raise Whippets? I wasn't a real big Whippet fan until almost a year ago when Vivi got lost.

I have realized that the candle site is a way of bringing attention to Vivi and have been posting this website in the comments section. If she is in one of the top positions people will start to say, who's Vivi? The same day we had 1000 for Vivi, Barbaro had 20,000. That means more than 20,000 probably saw her name. Then I went to the Tim Woolley Racing Site and invited people here. I have noticed some new names and that is what Vivi needs. There really are alot of parallels. The will to survive for one. The doing good for less regal animals through her for another.

I think I just lit 100 candles for Vivi.

SURE: It's our way of showing Vivi and others SHE IS NOT FORGOTTEN < We will alway's PRAY for her, till we know she is SAFE.

Try it sometime, it's only a candle site, not a Holy Water site, so you should be Ok, then again maybe you need the Holy water to put your flame OUT!

AMEN, ROSA!

what's a looser?

Thanks Rosa - Vivi is now back in 2nd place again on the candlesite.

Pam - no he didn't mentioned the names - darn

Pam, I have bred a few litters of whippets, 4 litters in 17 years. Also I show, course and race them.

Pam: LOVE "GRATEFUL",I less wax accidents! lol

Sorry, forgot "have" in my last post.

So true Rosa and especially when I'm accident prone anyway. My house is alot safer! lol

SURE: Answer to your last question, "Someone who uses a fake name to post"

Oh ok "Rosa"

I knew that would draw you out! GOTCHA!
YOU are so TRANSPARENT!

Did anyone notice that candlelighter, and Sure have the same e-mail address? Just an observation.

Sure: I realize Grammer and spelling really bother you. I knew that would get you! You took the bait, and it's very clear who you are to me. THANKS!

I don't know, and don't care, who SURE or CANDLELIGHTER are. My heart and my soul are still way to sad about Barbaro. Every time I see a picture or the news and he is there, I cry because of that look in his face of wanting to survive so strongly. I really had no idea I had gotten so attached to the life of this sweet champion.

Enough said, needing tissues again.

Draw me out? What the h are you talking about "Rosa"? I hardly need drawing out. Sharon, anyone can use anyone else's email address. Don't be too proud of your incredible powers of deduction.

Of course I could be trying to start a little trouble. I mean if I can't get people to bite on some clever remark I've made---I just talk to myself. I am so clever.

Attention fake Sure: Learn my writing style if you want to copy me. Oh wait, that would require you to get an education. Sorry. Forget it.

Ms L and other's:

Check this out:

Update 1423: Here is the second glimpse of Barbaro from John Hennegan. This clip is actually is in the documentary "First Saturday in May": Michael introduces his son to Barbaro

It's a beautiful simple clip.

Think that those prayer and candles aren't helping?
I just got the following e-mail.

I am Spit McGee's mom......I had no idea that my beloved Spitty's condition (Feline Hypertropic Cardiomyopathy) has been forwarded to another prayer/blog group. Thank you so very much for your prayers for my Spit. I found the candle sight and it is such a comfort to know that people are holding Spit McGee up in prayer for his healing.

God Bless you,
Jeanine

If you want to live your world of magical thinking, fine. Just keep out of the way so the adults can work.

I was reading the Barbaro blog before and Dr. Richardson said that on Sunday night and Monday, Barbaro had a hollow look in his eyes and he was biting. He was telling them he had enough. The Jacksons and the Dr. who epitomize class beyond words knew it was time to let their beloved horse go. Dr. Richardson is heartbroken also as he became very attached to his patient.
They have pictures on the blog and I saw the ones of his baby brother and parents. Someone posted that Barbaro's mother was showing signs of labor but it wasn't confirmed. I'm going to donate to the laminitis fund ($29). Anything to help find the cure for this.

Horses are smelly.

Attention "Really" Sure: Learn Your writing style if I wish to copy you??? Oh wait, that would require me to become sarcastic and bitter. Sorry. Forget it. Too much trouble. You're already got the corner on that market. Most of the candle lighters you look down upon have poured their cash, their hard work, and their souls into Vivi. Can't wait to see your list of accomplishments,... for Sure! (I probably won't do this again, it's too hard acting this intelligent and superior! And the only thing I really like about it is Your name!) Will we get to read your Babel fish French again? Oh, Make that "Bien Sur!"

FRIDAY IS A FULL MOON! Here they come again! Yikes!

I think we should forget the candles,Irene...and find ourselves a good exorcist! (I still think we've got one person talking to him/herself.) The full moon might explain it. Maybe our scroll bars were invented for full moons. Thanks for your help with the candles, and love up your kitties for us!Read the note from Jeanine, those lights are doing some good!

Did someone say FUll MOON? Warming up the fountain!

Sharon, I am going to start a candle Group for "SURE".
Lets all go lite some candles!!!

Fake Sure: I have no idea what you are talking about regarding french. What I love about this site is that I take 2 seconds to write a post, and you people, oozing righteous indignation, respond with paragraphs of melodramatic gems. I enjoy Paula Wright and her crazy talk about the end days. I can't believe people believe in that nonsense.

Vivi has 1000 as of 2 minutes ago....if you have a minute to spare, let one. Lots are low and burning out. Hopey has 107. It's cold in CT too and she needs to be found.

Thanks...

SURE, it's called faith and there might come a time in your life when it will be all there is to sustain you in difficult times.

Ooops, that should be, if you have a minute, LIGHT one! Sorry....

Mark S. -- if you see this, maybe Bailey could be in the Newsday lost pets column, they give you 3 days free and Newsday has such a large circulation.

Carpola? Was that supposed to be CRAPola??? I know horses don't smell nearly as bad as you do

if anyone wants to see 2 of BJ's and Gail's babies getting ready to go home, email me at work. i will get them to you. the other ones are there as well and are drop-dead beautiful :) Venus is dawning a pretty pink little sweater and Tom had a sweater as well but was a little too pudgy for it. great pictures and a happy ending.

SURE--I'M NOT CRAZY TALKING ABOUT THE END TIMES!!
YOU'LL HAVE TO ANSWER TO GOD AND HIS SON, JESUS WHEN YOUR TIME COMES!! BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU'RE SAYING!!
WE ARE IN END TIMES, PERIOD!!
READ THE BIBLE AND WEEP!!

yikes....

AND I DON'T ENJOY POSTINGS ANYMORE BECAUSE THE PEOPLE HERE ON THE BLOG ARE RUDE AND UNCARING.
AND THEY KEEP BRING IN MANY SAD NEWS TO SHARE, NOT UPLIFTING STORIES.
SO I DECIDE TO LEAVING HERE.
GOD BLESS YOU ALL EVEN SURE, TOO.

hello??? i just asked about the SAVED PUPPY pics. i think that's GREAT news, not just good.

There is a new post.

Sure, you need to study the Bible prophecies before you start cutting down Paula Wright. She knows a lot more than you do.

BETTY LAYNE--THANK YOU!! I appreciate you standing up for me. I do read and study alot of the prophecies onlines and in the Bible daily. they are connect to everything around us and this sinful world. One day the world will be healed by Jesus our future King!! :-)
God bless you and loves you, Betty!

Sure, I did not appreciate your comment to Sharon:

"If you want to live your world of magical thinking, fine. Just keep out of the way so the adults can work.

Posted by: Sure | January 31, 2007 at 07:07 PM"

Sure, I believe you owe Sharon an apology. She and Betty are very kind people, and they have shown kindness to everyone on the blog.

Personally, for me, if I have something in my life that is really upsetting, I always call on Sharon and Betty to please pray with me. I can tell you, I have always felt their presence of prayer while working through some difficult times.

I would very much appreciate it if you would be kind to these two ladies and respect their religious strengths in the future. Thank you.

Hey Kathleen

Ignore Sure, let them babble or whatever it is they do to make people get riled up and respond to their no nonsense comments. Ask yourself is it worth it to even bother commenting back to them. Let them say what they want who really cares about them anyway.

How is the little Tink? Buy some new pillows lately?

I have been lighting candles most of the day. They are going out faster than I can light new ones. If anyone has time please light some candles.

I'll be there this evening.

Pam

this doesn't pertain to Barbaro (bless his sweet beautiful heart) but since a lot of you are posting at this thread, I wanted to make sure you see this. Apparently we have another case of abuse - this time with a puppy that needs our letters: here is the details - please write OR fax your letters. THANK YOU

The two boys (Justin and Joshua Moulder) face up to 90 years in prison, but could receive much less if the judge does not sentence them consecutively. Sentencing is scheduled for February 9th.

URGENT: Your letters to the judge in support of the maximum sentence for these animal torturers are desperately needed! Letters should be sent as soon as possible.

Mail to:
Judge Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore
T4905 Justice Center Tower
185 Central Avenue
Atlanta, GA 30303

Fax to:
(404) 893-6608
(404) 730-0162

Want to do more? Here are three additional ways you can make a difference:

1. Attend the sentencing
Make plans to attend the sentencing on February 9th, and encourage other animal lovers to do the same. The defendants will probably attempt to put on evidence about "mitigating circumstances" and we need a large turnout in support of the maximum punishment.

Where to go:
Fulton County Justice Tower
Room 4-E, Judge Thelma Wyatt Moore
136 Pryor Street SW
Atlanta, GA 30303
404-730-4981

Parking is on Pryor Street SW and is approx $12.00 for the entire day.

2. Email the media
Write to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other local media outlets and tell them why you support the maximum punishment.

AJC Letters to the Editor Form
AJC Managing News Editor Hank Klibanoff
AJC Reporter David Bennett
WXIA-TV Reporter Paul Crawley

3. Lobby for stronger animal torture penalties in Georgia
Tell Georgia officials that 5 years in prison for torturing an animal isn't long enough. Click here for all the information you'll need.

Thanks kathy I've seen this in the paper already and they acted as if they could care less. I will be sending a letter and hoping it makes a diference. Seems like the abusers are getting younger and that's a sign of a serious problem for when they grow up. It has to stop now.

your evilness - keep on top of our Monica about the baby. guilt is working!!! (wink, wink)

HELLO EVERYONE--Yesterday (January 31st) was my 43rd birthday. I did enjoyed the quiet day.
Mila did send me the personal emails (2 of them) and I did loved her emails.
And I am still praying for Vivi's safe and her health because the cold, brutal weather is coming very soon!
Enjoy your evening, everyone.

Here's another one to add to the list, Karen...
I'm rescuing a kitty tomorrow from a situation where his owner moved to an apartment that doesn't allow pets and she's left the kitty back at her old house all alone. For weeks she's tried to get him adopted but no takers. I've made arrangements with a local cat rescue group and tomorrow I'm taking him to the vet for all his shots, etc., and then he'll be at a local PetsMart store. Tai is a 2 yr old black and while male, neutered and declawed. Poor baby is going to have a really confusing traumatic day tomorrow but happily he's on his way to finding his forever family.
If it weren't for people I've met in this wonderful Vivi community, I wouldn't have been able to help this little guy.

Barbaro had a different destiny. Some winners have gone on to further fame and success in their racing careers or at stud. A select few have won the Triple Crown. All were victors in their day. A rarefied few achieve greatness. Through thousand of races over ever-increasing generations, the names of the truly great still resound. Secretariat, Seabiscuit, Man o' War and Native Dancer hear the hoofbeats of the newest legend to join their august racing ranks. Barbaro has earned his place.

Many will participate in a moment of silence at 10:30 am (EST) to pay their respects to Barbaro and his connections. Many will then continue to fight for all those things that are now important to sustain Barbaro's legacy.

Can I ask everyone at 10:30 am Eastern Time - its just about 30 minutes - to please take a moment of silence in honor of Barbaro - it will be one week ago that he lost his fight to Laminitis.

You can also honor him by donating $29 (or more) to The Fund to Fight Laminitis at UPenn:

http://www.vet.upenn.edu/giving/laminitisfund_shoe.htm

Kathy - I lit another Candle for Barbaro at 10:30 EST and stopped to reflect at Tim's website. I have already sent the donation.
Keeping the faith and spirit alive in Texas

I lit a candle also and donated $29 to the laminitis fund in honor of Dr. Richardson and Barbaro as the team that changed things

Hi everyone-- Last night at the superbowl games...I did voted on COLTS for a good reason: to honor Barbaro. And the scores was COLTS 29 Bears 17; have you noticed the scores from COLTs?? 29!!
Because Barbaro was a colt that's why the COLTS wons the games so the score was perfect: 29.
I can imagine Barbaro looked down and saying:"GO COLTS! GO"
God bless you all and Barbaro is now running, running and more running!!
Have a good day everyone.

Thank you everyone that took the time to honor Barbaro with a candle and a prayer. A great big {{{hhhuuugggg}}}} to all those that did. Also - thank you to that are able to donate to the laminitis cure - I think this is becoming my big drive - to stamp out laminitis.

Hi,

I am a Philadelphia(Pa)-area musician/songwriter who has composed an original song (entitled “Wear Your Crown”) in tribute to Barbaro, his fight for survival, and to the doctors/medical staff/volunteers that helped treat him through his courageous battle.

For all of us who cheered him on, both on and (especially!) off the race track, his battle was/IS truly inspiring.

Written/recorded just days after his passing. The song can be heard at my band's profile page: http://www.myspace.com/thetellalls

May his memory live forever...

Ken Buono-The Tell Alls

Last night I had a dream. I saw a horse standing on a hill against the setting sun. A beautiful chestnut colt seemed to beckon me. Clouds started to gather as I started up the hill to where the horse was. I sensed a deep sadness from the horse. I can’t explain it but I’ve always had a special gift of empathy. This majestic creature appeared so strong and powerful and yet I sensed in it pain. I arrived at the fence that separated us and opened the gate. The horse turned and looked straight at me. For a moment we just looked at one another. But it was a look like no other. I looked into his eyes and I understood. I believe that I saw his soul and he mine.

In an instant, I knew it was Barbaro. And this magnificent beast, which had looked so healthy, was hurt - a deep, profound wound. Don’t ask me how, I just knew.

I thought, Barbaro, you courageous, valiant steed, Equus, friend of man. How can I help? Barbaro bowed his head; my power of empathy in instant told me Barbaro had made a decision. It was a good decision, a decision that sadden me and would sadden many other people, but the right decision. Just then there was a break in the clouds above and a golden beacon of light shone down, illuminating Barbaro. He looked up and whinnied. Barbaro was going home. The gate I had opened, he now trotted through. Barbaro soon increased his pace to a gallop. He kicked up his heels in joy like when he was a young foal with naught to fret about but laying in the soft grass on a lazy, warm day and nestling at his mother’s teat for sweet milk. He was afire with the joy of freedom of movement and of flying. He was fiercely alive - alive with all that was good and holy between man and beast, beast and God. Run Barbaro, run, mighty being and true friend. I watched as the proud champion ascended into heaven atop a sunray, his hooves aflame, his mane and tail alight and shining. I whispered, “Godspeed, Barbaro, and thank you for your gift to all of us.”

I woke in the morning a found out that Barbaro had been put down. This is a true story.

There is one more part to the dream that I know sounds crazy but I have to say it because I know that’s what Barbaro wanted me to do. He asked me to tell the world he was happy, at peace and thank everyone for all their prayers.

I love Barbaro even though he is gone! Let angels lead you in!

COLLEEN - I so agree. This beautiful horse was a testament of strength, dignity and all that was good. I wish his fate could have been better, but he was a model to all of us through his drive after such an aweful injury. He was an inspiration to me to forget the pain from my arthritis, and keep pushing f
