Almost a year later
Team Vivi Update 2/01/07
The one-year anniversary of the day that Vivi was carelessly mishandled and lost at JFK Airport while entrusted to Delta Airlines to get her home, safely, to California, is only two weeks away.
Vivi is still missing.
There have been no confirmed sightings of Vivi since November. Since that time, we have received calls of people seen “walking” Vivi, unfortunately, the volunteers have not been successful in seeing these people walking Vivi while doing stake-outs of the areas. There are three areas, one in Astoria, Queens, one in East New York, Brooklyn and one in Long Island, not far from JFK Airport.
We are considering hiring professionals to try and confirm these as the volunteer’s schedules and daily lives prohibit us from checking these calls out effectively. Seems the Vivi Team is everywhere but never in the right place at the right time. I can only hope that if someone does have Vivi, that she is being cared for.
The media blitz surrounding Vivi’s unfortunate anniversary has already begun. As hard as it is, to relive what happened and all that the Vivi Team and people from all over the country have done to help with Vivi’s search, it is very important to keep the public informed that Vivi is still missing. Someone, somewhere, will see her and give us the call we have long awaited.
Besides learning about lost dog’s habits, what to do, and where to go for help, I’ve met some very incredible and caring people. The Vivi Team and Vivi’s Out-of Town Team, as well as other volunteers, brought together because of Vivi, have been instrumental in helping to rescue and re-home over 60 animals! A litter of puppies was rescued from a vacant lot in Queens by Team Vivi’s Barbara Jean and Nancy, just last week! All of these animals now have loving homes.
Many of Vivi’s volunteers, while out posting flyers and searching for Vivi, are helping to locate other missing dogs as well. Max, a white and brown pitbull went missing after a car accident in Kew Gardens, Queens in November. Bailey, a black and white Alaskan Malamute, was stolen from her home on January 18, and was seen wandering in Elmont, Long Island.
Whatever eyes were opened, because of Vivi, will never see things the same. We will always look at a loose dog, not so much as a stray, but possibly as someone’s lost pet.
A small group of us, formed from the Vivi search, had our first meeting about how to change the way airlines treat and handle animals while in their care. We do not want what happened to Vivi and the torment that Jil, Rick, Paul and Bo have been put through, to ever happen again. There is no reason for it. We never heard the outcome of Delta’s “internal investigation.” The report Delta did file is below:
Delta Air Lines
Live Animal Incident Report - REDACTED
Reporting Period: February 1 – February 28, 2006
Carrier
Delta Air Lines
Flight Number
Scheduled Flight # DL2027 JFK-LAX
Date and Time of Incident
February 15, 2006 – approximately 1100
Type of Incident
Escape
Description of Animal
Breed: Whippet
Name: ViVi
Age: 3 years
Description of the Incident
Passenger checked one dog to travel on Flight DL2027 from JFK to LAX. At acceptance, a visual inspection of the kennel did not reveal any defects. All locking pins appeared to be fully engaged. This kennel and two additional kennels were transported in a secured conveyance to the gate. When the driver disconnected the conveyance, the driver noticed that one dog was out of its kennel. Ramp agents attempted to secure the dog but were unsuccessful. Delta, with assistance from the Port Authority, provided additional resources for the search efforts.
Cause of the Incident
A manual inspection revealed that the kennel’s locking mechanism appeared defective, as it lacked adequate tension to keep the locking pins properly engaged.
Corrective Action Taken
System review of pet acceptance procedures, with an emphasis on kennel specifications. Additional procedures implemented requiring kennel doors to be secured with releasable cable ties where possible.
Delta did not return Vivi’s crate to her owners for two weeks after they lost Vivi.
We are in the research phase right now and are compiling information of airline procedures for checking in animals. We are putting together a list of questions to forward out to whoever flies or has flown an animal, and what their experience was, good and/or bad. In doing some research already, animals flying in cargo are considered baggage and it seems that many airlines subcontract baggage handlers. It doesn’t make a difference to me who handles the baggage but whoever is handling the animals checked in MUST have some sort of training on the care and handling of the animal. A trained supervisor, from the airlines, should be on hand to make sure the animal boards the plane safely and arrives safely. I will make the questionnaires available as soon as they are finished.
There are a few people on the Vivi Team that are still working on different tactics and angles. There are people on the Vivi Team that feel she’ll never be found. Everyone will have to decide for themselves when to stop their active search. Other than following up on incoming calls to Vivi’s 800 number and keeping in contact with the rest of Team Vivi, there’s not much more, I feel, can be done. In my heart, I’ll never give up hope. I’ll always be looking for Vivi as I drive. I’ll continue to check the local shelter and will continue to tell people as I see them that Vivi is still missing. And I pray, someday, Vivi is found.
Jil, Rick, Paul and Bo have told me time and again, they could never thank all of the volunteers enough for the time, effort and donations put forth for Vivi’s search. I know we are all very appreciated for doing all that we have.
I’ll be attending and exhibiting at the Westminster Kennel Club show again this year, as I have since 1998. I know this year, and every year thereafter, will never be the same for me, all because of a beautiful lost Whippet, CH Bohem’s C’est La Vie.
As always, and forever, keeping the faith.
Bonnie

Just adding to that, I have been keeping account of the dogs and cats rescued directly because of Vivi and right now I count at least 59 in New York plus Connecticut, Massachusetts, Michigan and Georgia. Anyone remember any pugs rescued because of our search for Biggie? Other states I am missing?
If anyone has anything to add to this list I might have missed let me know. Thanks.

Bonnie,
Thanks for the wonderful job that you have done, and are doing for Team Vivi. I admire both you and Denise for having seen the opportunity for others to work and interact with this story. We didn't just read the story and become depressed, we became a part of the story. Vivi's legacy may be increase airline protection, and a change of heart in rescuing, and adopting animals who need love. Thoughts (and of course prayers)! Still hoping for her return -

There were 3 dogs in Michigan "living on borrowed"time who were adopted as a result of Vivi networking. Michigan(Barbara P, and Mila)is still trying to bring Saffie home!As fellow Michigander Rosa says "Viva, La Vivi!"

I had 56 until you mentioned them so they are in the 59 count. That said it is great to hear the stories that go with the numbers.

All I have to say, If not for getting involved. I would never have gotten the honeymooners.. They are a joy, even if sometimes they are monsters.. They have the greatest personalities, for cats.. They love to Play & Romp around the house.. Mike & I are now just the care takers.. They have made the house there own.. I do pray every day, that Vivi is found..
I know she is out there somewhere..
Also, Of the women that I have meet while searching for the Vixen.. You guys are the greatest.. All these other animals would not have been found & would have met a different faith..
Posted by: Linda Speranza | February 01, 2007 at 12:31 PM
ha ha ha Linda - thru my tears for Barbaro I had to laugh - met a different faith? Would that be Catholic or Baptist or?????? I know it is a typo but it still brought a smile to this very weepy girl.
Posted by: Kathy in Colorado | February 01, 2007 at 12:33 PM
Kathy in Colo.. I do not mean faith as in religion.. I mean.
The circumstances would have been very different for alot of the animals, if they had not been found...

I know - I think you meant fate didn't you?

a slip of the fingers. Sorry!

Anyway Linda - it brought a welcome grin to me

Since USAIR has recended it's bid for Delta, Delta will continue flying animals. Although I read that they are thinking of putting a stop to it. With all the show people wanting to fly their animals to the shows I don't see it ever coming to a complete halt with all the airlines.

I believe Vivi is out there and we will find her. With the publicity coming because of Westminster, more eyes and ears will be aware that she is still missing. We can't forget the stories of pets being lost for 1 year, 3 years and even 7 years who are found. These stories are what makes me believe in miracles, human and animal. I'm in this for the duration; I hope it won't be 7 years.

Hey, Darlene,
I'm fine. How is your new pup doing? Any pictures? I'm doing mailings these days for Vivi. I hope there will be big pictures of her at Westminster that can also be seen by the TV audience. I want to say again you guys are fantastic and have helped so many furry friends and found them homes. I'm so glad I met you.
Posted by: Susan Lorinsky | February 01, 2007 at 02:13 PM
Pam MN, I know others feel the same way. I hope the camera will catch Vivi's pretty face so a location can be focused on.
Posted by: Susan Lorinsky | February 01, 2007 at 02:29 PM
I agree with Susan and Pam. I still have faith she is out there.
Keeping the faith for VIVI in Texas and will be until she is found.

Hi Bloggers, Hey this blog brought all of us
animal lovers together, and we have been through
so much. I have made some wonderful friends throughout the last year. I am still hoping and praying for Vivi, I worry about her if she is still
out in the cold, I just wish if someone had her they
would at least let the volunteers know.

Denise is still working on getting that damn court date. can you believe it??? nothing yet!!! Roby and I have been asking her what to do and she is out of ideas at this point. this dog cannot continue to sit until old age. i will send her another email to find out what in the world is going on with that. so frustrating, isn't it????
Sue G - i wish someone had her too :(

Just emailed Denise asking for an update asap. i told her i was now a fellow Pitbull owner and understand her love for them. i hope this judge gets it in gear and dismisses this thing or at least gives her the option to adopt him out to a friend or family member..... we will see.

I want to add my thanks also Bonnie for all you and Team Vivi have done. My feeling is that Vivi is with someone and let me tell you why: In the past few months Ticket, Gibby, The Whippet lost at the windy dog show and at least 2 others from K9 Amber Alert have been found. The most recent one was Bogey, found yesterday by a policeman who followed him on the road while slowing down traffic until he caught him. Although there were flyers put up for these Whippets, none of them had the amount of flyers or media blitz that Vivi had, and yet they were spotted and caught.Maybe I just want to believe that she is safely with someone out of the freezing cold and that someday that phone call will come in that we've all been praying for.

BE PREPARED TO PULL OUT THE HANKIES, GIRLS, BUT FOR A WONDERFUL REASON. AFTER YESTERDAY'S CYNICSM THE LAST PARAGRAPH IN THIS LETTER I RECEIVED, REALLY GOT TO ME...(SPIT MCGEE IS THE KITTY SUFFERING FROM CARDIOMYOTROPHY.)
Thank you all so much for the candles - I am completely overwhelmed at the faithfulness of this wonderful community holding my Spit McGee in prayer.
I wonder if Vivi's Mom knows what an incrediable ministry of love and support that will ALWAYS be Vivi's legacy....God has used this wonderful
dog in a mighty way.....HE WILL SEE HER SAFELY HOME.
God Bless you abundantly dear friends. And Thank you for keeping Spit McGee in your prayers.

PEOPLE, IN THE LAST YEAR WE HAVE SUPPORTED ONE ANOTHER IN MANY GOOD AND BAD TIMES--NEW BABIES, NEW PUPPIES, SIGHTINGS, FOUND ANIMALS, THE ILLNESS OF OUR LOVED ONES, AND UNFORTUNATELY THEIR DEMISE. WE HAVE SEARCHED,FAXED,DONATED,LISTENED, CHEERED, CRIED, AND ... PRAYED. THAT LOVE TOO IS PART OF VIVI'S LEGACY, ALTHOUGH IT MIGHT BE HARDER TO COUNT IN NUMBERS.

Ok - apparently we have another case of abuse - this time with an Ibizan Hound that needs our letters: here is the details - please write OR fax your letters. THANK YOU
The two boys face up to 90 years in prison, but could receive much less if the judge does not sentence them consecutively. Sentencing is scheduled for February 9th.
URGENT: Your letters to the judge in support of the maximum sentence for these animal torturers are desperately needed! Letters should be sent as soon as possible.
Mail to:
Judge Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore
T4905 Justice Center Tower
185 Central Avenue
Atlanta, GA 30303
Fax to:
(404) 893-6608
(404) 730-0162
Want to do more? Here are three additional ways you can make a difference:
1. Attend the sentencing
Make plans to attend the sentencing on February 9th, and encourage other animal lovers to do the same. The defendants will probably attempt to put on evidence about "mitigating circumstances" and we need a large turnout in support of the maximum punishment.
Where to go:
Fulton County Justice Tower
Room 4-E, Judge Thelma Wyatt Moore
136 Pryor Street SW
Atlanta, GA 30303
404-730-4981
Parking is on Pryor Street SW and is approx $12.00 for the entire day.
2. Email the media
Write to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and other local media outlets and tell them why you support the maximum punishment.
AJC Letters to the Editor Form
AJC Managing News Editor Hank Klibanoff
AJC Reporter David Bennett
WXIA-TV Reporter Paul Crawley
3. Lobby for stronger animal torture penalties in Georgia
Tell Georgia officials that 5 years in prison for torturing an animal isn't long enough. Click here for all the information you'll need.

Note to the above post - not sure if it was an Ibizan or not so just mention puppy in your letters. Thanks

Kathy-Co,
Could you send me a little more info on the Ibizan abuse case? I don't need all the details, but I want to be able to write and know what kind of abuse I'm takling about..How old are the "boys".....
This makes me sick! It's bad enough that adult men abuse dogs, but kids? How sick and sad! Lemmme at em!

Here is something that just came to me at work - cool idea - if you know of anybody that ties their dogs, please send their address to this group.
Here is an interesting idea I read about on a site I like. The site is
www.dogsdeservebetter.com. Essentially, it's this: if you know of a dog
that is chained or tied up much/all of the time, you can send the owner's
address to info@dogsdeservebetter.org; they will in turn send a homemade
Valentine's card, made by children (I'll get to that part in a minute) to
that home asking that they not chain their dog (which is the essence of this
group, Dogs Deserve Better). They need the addresses by Feb. 7 in order to
get the Valentines out. The Valentines are not nasty, but rather sweet,
with photos of puppies, etc. stating how chaining hurts and they would
rather be inside with their families, etc.
Additionally, they are looking for homemade Valentines from children to
send--I think they need those pretty soon--check the website for more info.
I thought it was an interesting idea--I think many people know/see a dog
chained in a yard from time to time and don't know what to do about it, but
this is a nice, anonymous, non-spiteful way to ask for better treatment for
the dogs.

Actually, B-J rescued the puppies the next day when the CACC guy lifted the roof off their den. . I saw them the evening before when we were out there and all I did was shriek "Puppies ! Puppies !" Big help. LOL. The little weasels backed away from us into their den and then started growling at us from the darkness.

Does the 59 include the 11 or 12 mini dachshunds who were scheduled for euthanasia, some of them very soon after we first heard of them ? Besides saving their precious lives, their adopters' lives are enriched by having them !
Posted by: Nancy Mohrmann | February 01, 2007 at 06:18 PM
Yes it includes the dachshunds, Thanks
I have it in two lists, NY and out of town. They were in CT weren't they?

God - it has been so long since i pounded the keys on the blog at night. it feels so familiar - like it has been a day and not a year. I feel so bad - tonight i let my babies out and stood on the deck staring across Jamaica Bay lookings at the light of JFK - planes coming in, the tower lit and whispering to myself, "Damn you all for doing this to her, to us." i can't believe i have been with you all for so long. i would be lost without you :)
Posted by: darlene osullivan | February 01, 2007 at 07:18 PM
oh, Karen especially - on a bit of a brighter note - Wendy, Tyson's Mom, just picked a stray cat off of the streets. after she wanted to kill me, she admitted it was because we brought her along on the cemetery rescue and she adopted Tyson. she said she understood now what we all are about. the cat is sickly and she had to take him to her vet. he has blood in his lungs and has trouble breathing, along with a very bad case of worms. he is still kicking though and as of this afrternoon, was doing a bit better. so, there's another one rescued and another one addicted to saving the animals!!
Posted by: darlene osullivan | February 01, 2007 at 07:22 PM
hey karen, can you print the list of the 60 animals
rescued, it would be nice to see. My MIL loves
her little rescued Doxie so much, and I thank the
blog for her happiness every day
Posted by: SueG | February 01, 2007 at 07:22 PM
Darlene, I hope Delta is mentioned often during Westminster. Let them drown in a guilty conscience. No one should have this happen to them. And Vivi's image at the show is etched in my mind forever.
Kathy, I'll send letters also. Can you give a few general facts about the case and what should be included in the letters?
Posted by: Susan Lorinsky | February 01, 2007 at 07:32 PM
I hope they mention something as well, Susan. doubt it though.. actually, they should do an entire smear campaign against those maggots.

Hi Gang-
I haven't been on the blog much lately, especially since I can't go on during the day. I do check it almost every night, though. I had to come on here after Denise's latest post. I'm sitting here crying like a baby. I never knew a more wonderful group of people before in my life and I thank God I met you all. My life has changed for the better because of the love and support of my friends on the blog, and I know that I will always be helping animals in some way or another for the rest of my life.
The one year anniversary of Vivi getting lost is a sobering one, and I pray to God she decides to let one of us find hersoon!!! Because of you, Vivi, we have helped so many.
Karen - please don't forget Kiva, the whippet lost in California that Marty was so instrumental in helping out.

EVERYONE, please light a candle for Vivi. Snow, ice and bad weather coming here tonight. Let's ask for our little whippet to come through this bad weather.
Thanks.....

Before I go light candles, I was just reading articles from the New Bolton Center at Penn. They have pictures of Barbaro with various people and whatever you may think of horse racing, the jockeys become attached to their horses. There are pictures of Edgar Prado when he visited Barbaro and you can see the love and tenderness he had for this beautiful horse. There is also a picture of Prado crying after Barbaro is injured. This horse was so loved by his people. They have been class acts.
Hoping Vivi and our other lost animals are safe and warm tonight.

Add Snoopy, a mini-pin. I read a post from Brooklyn Shelter mailing list from a couple who found him wandering on the street with a harness and leash "a cut and bleeding paw, freezing and terrified" and they took him in. They asked for help finding the owner, I emailed them with all the stuff I have learned from the Vivi saga, and three days later they found the owner.

Nancy, Another Great story with a happy ending.
The Vivi rescues just go on and on and on, NOW if it could just be Vivi's turn next.
We love you little whippet girl, please be safe and warm. VIVA LA VIVI!!

She is a beautiful dog and fast as could be , she has a real fancy name but we just call her Vivi. She runs like the wind and doesn't look back, the markings are wild going up and down her back. She came to town to be part of the show and before we knew it down the Cargo she goes, scared, and afraid because of some air heads who didn't know how to do their job, im came TEAM VIVI just like the mob... powerful people in spirit and soul without them I don't know where any of us would go.
Thank you Denise for letting us post here and read your stories ! Thank you to all of TEAM VIVI !!! many of us have really kept our faith for sooo long and we are doing it together... :) Keeping the faith...

Nancy, Do you still have Marty (DePorres) the "rescue mouse"? That story would bring a few smiles. Even if the little fellow has lived out his life span, the picture of you arguing with that cat over the little guy never fails to make me chuckle. You're something else lady. I think Marty should make the list of rescued animals!

A Candle Prayer- (This has been attributed to many people at many different places--but it sure fits us.I've paraphrased a bit.)
Father, This candle I have lit--may it be a light from You to lighten our way through difficulties and decisions. May it be a fire for You to burn away any selfishness and pride that suggests we can do anything apart from you. May it be a flame from you to kindle warmth in my heart and the desire to share your love with others. Let it be a beacon to light the way home for all who are lost and need your help and our caring. (MENTION YOUR INTENDED PEOPLE AND ANIMALS). Lord, sometimes I get busy and don't take much time to be alone with You. This candle is a little bit of myself that I offer to You. Help me to continue my prayer in all the work I do in Your name today. Amen.
Father- This prayer says it all for me today. Thank You for the love You show for us each day in ordinary every day things like candles! Bring Vivi and the lost ones to their families (and keep them out of the awful weather.) Heal Madison, and all our human brothers and sisters who need Your touch.

Ephesians 6:9
And let us not be weary in well doing; for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.
Good morning Daddy God. How precious you are to us. What Mighty and Glorious deeds have been wrought by your hands. Thank you Daddy for all the lives saved, comforted, nutured and lifted up from distress and despair. You are our Rock Jesus and the light in the darkness. We come to you Daddy God in faith and strength as we wait for the safe rescue of little Vivi. Flood her with your blessings, for she has caused so many to be saved. There are many people who have made a difference in this earth, but you have shown us what a difference your creatures make in our lives and in the world also. You use all of us equally and we thank you for that. Bless Vivi with the love and warmth of home that she so richly deserves. Her struggle will never be in vain. We continue to stand in faith at your throne. We will not be moved. We ask you to calm and warm the weather for Vivi and the other lost and homeless ones. We ask you to bless us with a sighting and the deliverance of this precious little girl. Time has no effect in this search, for it will go on as long as needed till she is home. Cover her with the warm shelter of your wings. Fill her belly with good food and fresh water. Continue to lead her ever closer to your Mighty Army. Lead them Daddy. You are their Captain and they follow you faithfully. Strengthen each and every one of us, that we may fulfill your work in this earth. Fill us with your laughter and rejoicing with Vivi's safe return. How we praise you in advance and in faith!!!
Bring justice for all your creatures who are abused. Do not allow these judges to look the other way. Touch their hearts and give them compassion towards your creation. Melt all hardness into tears at the wrongs that have been committed toward these innocent babies. We need you Daddy, for without you, we could not bear it. You are our strength and our song, our Father and the lover of our souls. You have given a love that truly will never die and will never end. We bow our heads in absolute gratitude. Protect your Mighty Army as they tread where others fear to go and bless them with your presence and total guidance. We lift all of our loved ones up to you in faith and expectation for great things to come. In Jesus's Name!!!
We believe!!!

Having been here since Day One (working from afar), it's almost impossible to believe that we are coming up on one year of loving, searching, and praying for Vivi. I have been quiet on the blog lately, but am still here and doing what I can. As this anniversary approaches, there is sadness and then the good things.... frustration and worry that Vivi has not been found, anger at Delta Airlines for their incompetence and lack of care, much more than one can say. Then, on the positive side the friendships found and established on this blog through trial and tribulation, and most of all the incredible continuing commitment and heartfelt work of the foot soldiers on the ground in NYC to find this elusive little girl. And, on the positive side, all of those who have been found and saved because of the search for Vivi. Yes, it's been quite a year.... and it is not over ... so much good has been done and will continue to be done because of Vivi's plight. I so pray for her and keep her in my heart constantly. The other one I debated about was the injured bird in Manhattan reported as urgent on Craigs List by Tara, then I relayed that message to BJ, BJ to a bird rescue group and they rushed to an apartment building. However, they found that it had been picked up by animal control so I didn't count it. Then again BJ followed up on it to make sure it was being cared for- so maybe I can get the rest of that story. It was a pigeon. BJ and Nancy together have quite a list by themselves- BJ carried home an injured Monarch Butterfly and cared for a Praying Mantis for 2 weeks reporting on her.
Looks like I need a third column.

Karen,
Please ask Nancy about Marty (DePorres).I don't know if we can count him, but the story is heartwarming, and priceless. Shows what a wonderful kindhearted lady she is, not that we didn't already know that.

Groundhog didn't see his shadow, so they are predicting an early Spring. That is good news, the faster we get this cold winter over with the better for Vivi!
Don't forget to keep the candles burining for our girl Vivi!

Just faxed off my letter to the Judge in the puppy abuse case - please write your letters and ask your friends and family to do so also - these boys should not be able to get away with abusing and killing a puppy. PLEASE WRITE and FAX
Posted by: Kathy in Colorado | February 02, 2007 at 10:40 AM
Susan - a little bit about the content of the letter that I need everyone to write - two brothers - Justin and Joshua Moulder - abused and killed a puppy - I won't tell you how - it is disgusting and so terrible - the puppy definitely suffered a terrible death.
the sentencing is February 9th so we need you to mail or possibly fax since the time is short your letters to:
Judge Thelma Wyatt Cummings Moore
T4905 Justice Center Tower
185 Central Avenue
Atlanta, GA 30303
Fax to:
(404) 893-6608
(404) 730-0162
The two boys face up to 90 years in prison, but could receive much less if the judge does not sentence them consecutively. Ask in your letters for her to sentence them consecutively to get the most time behind bars for them.
That is all I know, other than the method they used. I don't know their ages or anything else.
Please write and light a candle - I will start a candle site called "puppy". While you're there, light a candle for Vivi and one for sweet Barbaro too.
Happy Belated Birthday Paula :)

Well we did not get the snow they predicted, we got nothing here, someone above is watching over us and Vivi and all the lost animals out there. Bless the man above for keeping it mild here, first time it's been this warm ever here. Not complaining at all. Makes posting easier for us.
Karen don't forget to add the little maltese I scooped up in the middle of the road on my way to work one morning and got it back to her mommy. The list gets bigger. We also found another at my job and got it a home also. Are we walking magnets for animals here????

Karen,
There was another mourning dove named Hope that B-J tried to save. I believe she found Hope while searching for our Vivi also. Unfortunately, Hope did not make it, but B-J gave her love and tried very hard to help her.
Also, I forgot to mention the momma dog and 4 pups from Memphis that I helped rescue with some friends. My love and help with Vivi prompted me to do this.
The pups were all taken care of by a friend's rescue and have great homes. The elderly lady who adopted the momma dog loves her very much. I go by and check on them every now and then on my way home from work. The last time I went by, "momma" dog (yes, that is her name now) had kept a burglar out of this lady's home. This area is a very, very bad poverty area in Memphis.
I try to take momma and the elderly lady treats by, visit with them, and check on them at least once a month. This lady has really blessed my heart. She is like the African-American version of my grandmother I lost. Such a kind and charming lady. God has really blessed me with getting to know her through momma and her crew!

While we are writing letters to the Judge in Georgia for the abused puppy, please also write letters to your senators and congressmen to pass the anti slaughter horse bill - we need to get it passed while the memory of Barbaro is so fresh - politicians want to get their names mentioned and in the papers - passing this bill would do that so you can bet they will want to jump on the bandwagon -
Here are the links to contact your Congressmen and Senators.
The link to contact your area's Congressional Representative is (copy and paste into your browser):

An added bonus - my company matches contributions - maybe yours does too.

Here's another one to add to the list, Karen...
I'm rescuing a kitty tomorrow from a situation where his owner moved to an apartment that doesn't allow pets and she's left the kitty back at her old house all alone. For weeks she's tried to get him adopted but no takers. I've made arrangements with a local cat rescue group and tomorrow I'm taking him to the vet for all his shots, etc., and then he'll be at a local PetsMart store. Tai is a 2 yr old black and while male, neutered and declawed. Poor baby is going to have a really confusing traumatic day tomorrow but happily he's on his way to finding his forever family.
If it weren't for people I've met in this wonderful Vivi community, I wouldn't have been able to help this little guy.

JUST A PERSONAL NOTE: I'm no psychic, nor do I claim to have premonitions, but despite the cold, I feel pretty calm tonight. All I can think about is the last line in the note from Jeanine (Spit's Mom)-
"God has used this wonderful dog (VIVI) in a mighty way.....HE WILL SEE HER SAFELY HOME."
Sleep well everyone, God has everything under control...

After seeing the post by Ziporet last night, I copied and forwarded this to Bonnie. I also gave Bonnie a call to let her know about the post and my e-mail. She was going to check this when she got home.
I also e-mailed Ziporet to ask if she would forward any info to me to send directly to Bonnie knowing how busy they are in New York already with so many animals missing in addition to Vivi.
Sure hope Ziporet can help Vivi. Without any direct locations, I felt it was certainly worth pursuing.
Here is hoping! As of this morning at 5:41 am in Memphis, TN, I have not received any response from my e-mail.

The dog's been lost for almost a year, Westminster is right around the corner, media coverage will be out there. They will all come out of the woodwork now. This is just the start.

I'm not willing to discount anything or anybody regarding Vivi so I am emailing to a friend of mine in Israel who imported the first Bedlingtons to that country and see what he can find out about Ziporet. I wouldn't feel right if I didn't try. Will keep everyone posted if I learn anything.

Look at this one. I only pasted part of the story. Hero is one of us, I think.

Stray Dog Rescues Georgia Woman From Crash
THOMASVILLE, Ga. — A bruised and battered south Georgia woman credits a wayward German shepherd with rescuing her after her car careened down an embankment, tossing her through the rear window and leaving her sprawled, cut and bleeding, on the vehicle's trunk.
Thirty-six-year-old Shannon Lorio said the dog, which has since been given the name "Hero," pulled her by her collar off the trunk and dragged her about 50 yards through briars to the edge of a highway and let her lean against him so that she could stand up and flag a passing motorist.
Officials of the Thomasville-Thomas County Humane Society, which runs the local animal shelter — now Hero's temporary home — were so impressed with the victim's account they have arranged to have Hero evaluated for search and rescue work.
"That dog is always going to have a special place in my heart," Lorio said Friday during a tearful reunion with the dog. "He's my hero."

I think that dog would have a special place in my heart and also a home!!! Whatta guy!

You can do search on her herself...I rest my case.
Posted by: Gail | February 03, 2007 at 12:34 PM
Has anyone googled "ziporet carmel"? Among other things, You get a bunch of stuff about UFO encounters and sightings and also a norwegian show dog site that shows a picture of a blond woman handling a great dane with caption "Owner Ziporet Carmel" next to that. Don't know if that's her or handler. How many Ziporet Carmel's do you suppose there are in Israel?
How could Vivi have been picked up two days after escaping if there have been confirmed scents of her by tracking dogs for months following the escape?

GAIL: IMO there is nothing wrong in checking out anything regarding finding Vivi. Isn't that what we've been doing for the past year --with no results. The worst that can happen is that this Ziporet is not credible and then we're no worse off than we are now.My friend in Israel is checking her out so let's see if he can find out anything.

Hello,
I am a personal acquaintance of Ziporet Carmel. I am the president of the Israeli Herding Dog Club and correspondent for Dog News (you may look my name up with the editor). At the moment, I am working on an article about this woman's ability to locate missing dogs. Her statistics are not 100%, but quite impressive. She only heard about Vivi a week ago and I encouraged her to do her best in this case. We shall update you the moment we get any positive information. And you can tell you friend with the Bedlingtons (who, by the way probably no longer has the dog) to call me or Ziporet directly.

Yossi Guy - Thank you for clarifying more about Ziporet on the blog. Please excuse any negativity, but we have had so many people make statements and promises that were not valid and hurt the people who love this dog so much and want to help her anyway they can.
I received a response to my e-mail this morning. Ziporet raises and shows whippets, and her mother (the lady in the picture probably) is the Great Dane person. They both sound very nice, and we will be hearing more from them I believe.
I agree with Margot, let's give this nice young lady a chance and see if she can help us in any way. I truly believe these people care about animals, so let's give them a chance.
Thank you Ziporet. I will look forward to hearing more from you.

So where do YOU go from there KathleenS @ 5:02..You got an answer from her..What now. Can your share of not?
Posted by: ruby | February 03, 2007 at 05:07 PM
Ruby - She just responded and thanked me for e-mailing her. She shared no information other than the Whippets and Great Dane info (and I may have this mixed up - Ziporet may be the mother). Not sure looking at the website.
She did say that she felt Vivi was in Upstate with people who did not know who she is.
Bonnie wrote me that she had e-mailed her also and thanked me for letting her know about the post, and they are now in contact with each other.
She is a part of the blog, and anyone can e-mail her I am sure. She sounds like a very nice and interesting person, and has pictures of beautiful whippets on their website.
The more I see these beautiful whippet pups, the more I wonder if Tinkerbell does not need a whippet sister or brother.

Gail CT, I sent you an e-mail.

Wasn't Vivi sighted after 3 days? I remember a little girl and her sister, 2 boys at the park, the man jogging early in the morning in the park, the person walking her dog, etc. It should be checked out though. One never knows what could turn up.
Posted by: Susan Lorinsky | February 03, 2007 at 05:39 PM
Susan - I agree. They have picked up scents with the trackers, there have been sightings, etc., but what is the harm in at least investigating what this young lady is saying.
Errors can be made. She may be wrong, but then possibly we could be wrong also. If someone offers to help, I think they deserve to be heard. That is what this blog is all about anyway - to offer suggestions and help for Vivi and others.
Ziporet was very kind and mature in the way her help was offered. I, for one, would love to hear more about what she sees on Vivi.

Go for it ladies. I'm just tired of being taken in by people. Hope you find something.

Didn't Sedona post a while back that she thought
Vivi was in Upstate NY also, Hey what do we have
to lose. I say give her a chance, But I also agree
as the anniversary of Vivi is just around the corner
that we will probably get lots of kooks posting on
this blog. Who Knows!!
Keeping the faith for our wiley whippet

Sometimes these folks with this amazing ability see bits and pieces that are accurate. She may or may not be 100% in her accuracy but if there is even one vague shred that helps put the puzzle together, to me it's worth listening to her. Yes, it gets all of our hopes up, but try to remain cautiously optimistic.
Hi SueG! Hi Kathleen!

Well hi Sue G and Debra. It is like the old time "dachshund reunion" tonight. Debra, how is Ann doing? Sue G, how is Daisy doing?

The website from Israel is pretty impressive, along with all the links...
Posted by: Chris in KC | February 03, 2007 at 07:50 PM
Ziporet is the Mother and the young girl is her daughter. Both of them show dogs. I really feel we should follow up on this. Afterall, we really don't have any positive proof that any of the sightings were ever Vivi. Sometimes you find answers in the most unexpected places and God works in mysterious ways.I'm glad to see Kathleen and some of the others have an open mind.Let's not discount anything or anyone. We're in agreement that all we want is to find Vivi so let's follow up on everything.

Thanks Margot. I was afraid I was getting mom and the daughter mixed up. I also thought the website very impressive and nice. (Oh, those puppies were so cute! But Martha has reminded me how fast they run. Don't think I could keep up with a whippet for sure.) I enjoyed seeing pictures from the shows and other beautiful dogs on the website too.
I believe Bonnie will follow up with this. I know she has responded to Ziporet's request to e-mail her. I know Ziporet must be very proud of her daughter. You can see the love of these little animals in her eyes. And what a joy to have something that they both enjoy and share together as well.
That is the good thing about now having two married sons. I finally have two daughters that share my love for art and music too (and, of course, my love for my sons). The guys could not have picked two daughters I enjoy more than Selena and Kayla. They are the daughters that I have never had before.

Yossi Guy I am the person who has the friend in Israel as I showed dogs myself for many years. As has been stated, we have been burned many times by psychics, trackers etc so forgive us if we seem skepticle. I for one, never discount anything that could possibly lead to Vivi's recovery so I'm hoping Ziporet will communicate to Bonnie (our search coordinator) all her thoughts regarding Vivi. Thank you.
