A fine morning for a recall

Royal Canin announced that it is recalling the following dog and cat foods because they contain rice protein concentrate contaminated with melamine . The company stresses that no illness have been reported from ingesting the food, but rather that it is taking a "proactive" stance:

- Lamb Meal & Rice Formula Puppy DRY DOG FOOD
- Lamb Meal & Rice Formula Adult DRY DOG FOOD

Comments

Each morning before you feed you babies, check the website of the pet food you are using, one never knows these days what will be recalled.

4-25-07 New Recall today:

Precautionary Rice Protein Recall: Drs. Foster & Smith Adult Dry Lite Dog and Adult Dry Lite Cat Food

Rice protein concentrate has been indicated as a possible source of melamine recently found in pet food products. As a precautionary measure Wilbur-Ellis company, the supplier of rice protein concentrate, is voluntarily recalling all lots of rice protein concentrate. We received notification from the manufacturer today, April 25, 2007, suggesting we issue a precautionary recall.

Two of our products: Adult Lite Dry Dog (Item #'s 14178, 14179, 14180, 14262, 14263) and Adult Lite Dry Cat foods (Item #'s 12855, 12856, 13864, 13865) contain rice protein concentrate. Only the Adult Lite Dry Dog and Adult Lite Dry Cat foods contain rice protein concentrate.

Preliminary test results for melamine contamination have been negative. Final test results from the FDA are expected within two weeks. Please check the Adult Lite Dry Dog food or the Adult Lite Dry Cat food product pages on the DrsFosterSmith.com website for any updates.

There is one more company that has not come forward that received the tainted Rice Protein shipment - so one more pet food company yet to be disclosed.

A word of caution about labels. Pet food companies have six months to list new ingredients on the labels and Nature's Balalnce was using the Rice Protein and it was not on the product lables and also not on their website as an ingredient in their Venison dry products. Until the news hit the airways about their contamination - then they changed their websire.

UT HOGS TESTED, FED RPC FROM AMERICAN NUTRITION 04/26/07
The below article from today's news pretty much confirms American Nutrition in Utah is the remaining unnamed "pet food maker" who purchased potentially tainted RPC from Wilbur-Ellis. The five pet food makers Wilbur-Ellis sold the melamine-laced Chinese RPC to are 1) Diamond Pet Foods, makers of Natural Balance dry foods (plant in MO), 2) Chenango Valley Pet Foods, makers of Drs. Foster & Smith and SmartPac/LiveSmart (plant in NY), 3) Royal Canin, plant in MO, 4) C.J. Foods, makers of Blue Buffalo dry foods (plant in KS) and 5) American Nutrition, makers of Blue Buffalo and Natural Balance wet foods. This story, however, is far from over, as Sen. Durbin contends there is a second supplier whom the FDA has yet to name which purportedly sold potentially adulterated Chinese RPC to several pet food makers, also as yet unnamed.

There is a very informative video on my website that I recommend pet owners watch. What are we really feeding out pets? Take a peek and lets keep our pets safe. www.lovemyhealthypet.com

American Nutrition's web site is below. They make Atta Boy and Atta Cat and also Kirland that Costco sells, even though it is not listed on their site, and also dry pet food for Petsmart.

Info culled from American Nutrition Inc’s “About” page (http://www.anibrands.com/about.htm):

All we know is that they had received the tainted rice protein concentrate - what brands are affected we do not know as yet.

Recalls Confirmed:

Costco and American Nutrition have now both confirmed that Kirkland Signature canned food has been recalled.

From USA Today:

BEIJING — Chinese authorities acknowledged for the first time Thursday that ingredients exported to make pet food in the USA contained melamine, a chemical the U.S. Food and Drug Administration suspects led to scores of pet deaths in the past month.
As Beijing stepped up efforts to investigate the contamination, including allowing FDA inspectors to visit China, experts here said the fragmented nature of China's vast food processing industry makes inspection difficult and increases the likelihood of future problems.

I AM SORRY THIS IS SO LONG, BUT FELT IT IMPORTANT FOR THOSE OUT THERE THAT BREED/RAISE KITTENS AND PUPPIES READ IT IMMEDIATELY -

URGENT BREEDER ALERT

BEWARE PUPPY MILK REPLACERS AND WEANING FORMULA

by Robert Jay Russell, Ph.D., Coton de Tulear Club of America President
CotonNews@aol. com
www.CotonClub. com

April 26th, 2007. I was monitoring a livestock email list today when I noticed a post by one of the members who was looking for milk replacer for her kids (goats). She wrote:

Recently I had some kids born and mother refused them. Not having
enough milk from mother to feed these kids I went to Milk
Replacer. I usually use Land-O-Lakes Kid Milk Replacer but could not
find any anywhere. I went to Tractor Supply Company (TSC) and purchased two 10# bags of MannaPro UNIMILK. I have since lost one kid. I happened to be talking to a friend in Indiana about
what happened and she asked me what replacer I was using, so I told
her...This is when I found out that brand had a RECALL notice. I
searched through the information and found that INDEED the bags I
purchased were part of that recall. I Called the TSC store and they
had no idea anything had a recall on it. I printed the info out and
the next day I took everything into the store to prove to them. The
recall has been in place since 3-30-07. All the Unimilk was still on
the shelf, not taking my word for it. I showed the manager the
printout and he searched the TSC website and found no alerts. He
said he would give me my money back for both bags but he couldn't do
anything about the kid. Yesterday I stopped at a friends house and
found they she was using UNIMILK for a calf... She got it at TSC
about 2 weeks ago. Why wasn't TSC informed? And then when they
were? Why didn't they do anything about it?

Dr. Russell continues:

I went on the Manna Pro corporation web site today and had a very difficult time finding a tiny button which stated "Information about Manna Pro Milk Replacer" (nothing about "Alert" or "Recall" or Danger"). This is what that MannaPro information page stated:

Manna Pro has a heritage of quality and takes pride in maintaining the highest quality standards for the products it produces and sells under the Manna Pro brand name.

Very recently, a few customers have reported that, when mixed with water, the Unimilk they purchased turns light grey in color rather than the characteristic creamy white. As we have investigated these consumer calls, we have identified that a single batch of Unimilk is affected by this issue.

The lot codes for this product are listed below.

Updated 3/30/2007

Dr. Russell continues:

Note that the MannaPro recall mentions nothing about poisoned gluten nor does it mention any report to the FDA. However, it is reasonable to suggest that this company may be quietly attempting to cover up another case of Chinese gluten/protein concentrate melamine poisoning. Manna Pro makes livestock feed for farmers AND inexpensive pet food most often sold at farm supply stores (but note: The Tractor Supply Company is located in suburban and even urban areas throughout the US and is popular with suburbanites, not just farmers).

What is significant here is the penetration of possible highly toxic food into the category of "Milk Replacer" and "Weaning Formula" for dogs and cats. Many CTCA Code of Ethics Breeders and others use milk replacers and weaning formulae routinely, often as a bridge between mother's milk and puppy food at weaning time. So BEWARE!!! Check ingredient lists carefully.

AN ALTERNATIVE: you need not use a commercial weaning formula. Instead, blend milk with some finely blended puppy food or dog food that you've checked to make sure is NOT on any recall list and does NOT contain grain products (rice, corn, wheat, soy). This, in fact, is probably a far better formulae for weaning and milk replacement.

AND EVERYONE: check ingredient lists with care. Even milk replacers may contain protein concentrates, grain powders or glutens!

This crisis is far from over.

A new recall just about every single day for 2 months. What this says about our uniculture system of food production in general is really eye opening. When every thing comes from one place everyone is at such risk.

I have not confirmed this: Please call the company that makes "Chicken soup puppy and kitten dry and cans"

It was posted on another web site that a pet store owner received a call to remove these products. Not to alarm anyone - just please verify their status before you use them.

Sorry cannot verify the Chicken Soup puppy and kitten dry and cans. Conflicting information coming on this. Just please call the company or check out the web sites.

From MSNBC News:

Lick Your Chops Lamb Meal, Rice & Egg Cat Food in packages with a net weight of 4 lbs. and a code date best used by April 29, 2008.

HAS ANYONE SEEN ANYTHING ABOUT NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE, SENIOR AND SMALL BITES LAMB AND RICE FORMULA BEING RECALLED? THIS IS DRY FOOD...ANYONE?

I WAS TOLD IT WAS MENTIONED ON THE ITCHMO SITE, BUT I CANT FIND IT........I'M VERY WORRIED, THATS WHAT I NOW FEED MY DOGS.

I think it wise to avoid all products that have the rice protein or the glutens of any kind in it including the bran and whey and soy.

On Itchmo you click on the Forums link at the top of the page and then scroll down and look for the topic, pet food with wheat, rice, corn, bran etc glutens and protein concentrates, if you cannot find it on the first page of the forum, then click on the link that says other topics (it is within the first five or six I believe) and then you just have to read through - mostly people are posting products that include these ingredients. Call the company and ask them what is in their products, and each company has six months to list it on their packages.

See letter from Nutro Companies President:

http://www.nutroproducts.com/mfrecall.asp

I called Chicken Soup for the PetLovers soul and confirmed today these recalls:

Diamond Dog Wet food (can) 13 oz Lamb and Rice
Chicken Soup for the Petlovers Soul canned wet:

Kitten 5.5 oz
puppy 13 oz

(No dry and no others as of today)

RUBY:
Yes, there is mention that these biscuits contain the Rice Protein Concentrate (3rd ingredient on the list). If you email me, I will copy and paste it back to you....

There is not a mention of recall YET...it is on the ITCHMO blog where people are posting ALL foods they find using Rice Protein Concentrate as an ingredient.

RUBY:
Tried to email you comments on the Nutro foods, but postmaster returns my message....saying you do NOT have a Yahoo account...can't email you, sorry.

I tried...

Our canned manufacturer, American Nutrition, from Ogden Utah just informed us that they are recalling all canned products made in their plant that contain rice protein concentrate. American Nutrition continued by telling us that they added this ingredient to four of our canned products without informing us. The four products involved are:

Chicken Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Lamb Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Beef Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Ocean Fish Formula Canned Cat Food 3 oz & 6 oz

Sorry above is all Natural Balance canned recall:
Our canned manufacturer, American Nutrition, from Ogden Utah just informed us that they are recalling all canned products made in their plant that contain rice protein concentrate. American Nutrition continued by telling us that they added this ingredient to four of our canned products without informing us. The four products involved are:

Chicken Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Lamb Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz
Beef Formula Canned Dog Food 13 oz

I FINALLY USED MY HEAD AND CALLED NUTRO..THEY SAID NO NUTRO NATURAL CHOICE, OR DRY NUTRO FOODS HAVE BEEN RECALLED...MADE MY DAY!

Is Kirkland Signature dry food on a recall list??

Some Costco Kirkland products have been recalled. Call Costco or go to their website or look up here: www.itchmo.com - this is a website covering the pet food recalls - lots of good information there.

Please, here is another petition to sign http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/937015756?z00m=9425993<l=1177685393to held regulate the manufacturing of our pet food -

From the Purina Web Site:

Nestlé Purina is evaluating its ingredients sourced from China, and has implemented a new process to test for melamine in every load of wheat gluten. We also are implementing additional technology to further screen our pet food ingredients.

We regret to inform you that Sierra Pet Products has announced a voluntary recall of its Harmony Farms canned foods and dog biscuits due to product tampering.

Sierra Pet Products was made aware of the product tampering when American Nutrition, Inc. (ANI), the manufacturer of all Harmony Farms cans and biscuits, informed the Company that they had been adding rice protein concentrate to Harmony Farms canned dog and cat foods without the Company’s approval.

It appears that ANI had been adding the unauthorized rice protein concentrate to Harmony Farms products for some time and only told the Company when the FDA was about to conclude that some of ANI’s rice protein concentrate (Supplied by Wilber-Ellis) was contaminated with Melamine.

If you go to the Harmony Farms website the recall information is on a pop-up window and if you have a pop-up blocker on, you will not see it.

P.S. Why is Purina adding information about wheat gluten now when it wasn't on there recently? Is Purina trying to cover their bases in case they have a recall?
