Whoopi on Vick
The latest hoopla in the Michael Vick saga is over Whoopi Goldberg's comments on "The View" that his alleged involvement in organized dog fighting is "not an unusual thing for where he comes from," presumably referring to the South's traditional tolerance for bloodsport.
And then there's Newsday's own Les Payne, whose defense of Vick seeks to put him on a bar with owners who dump their animals at shelters because they have a new baby or move into no-pets-allowed apartments. I'm still getting emails on that one.

I had always liked Whoopi up until this comment today. She is on my "you know what" list - and she will definitely stay there.
And I am a born and bred Southerner from Memphis, TN. Yes, dogfighting does go on here as it does in other parts of the US, but it is by no means accepted in the South either. She needs to get her "shit together" before making statements for we Southerners!
Posted by: Kathleen Stephenson | September 04, 2007 at 07:12 PM
I do not watch The View. When she said "Not an unusual thing" did she say it like it is an "acceptable" thing or just like "it is something that happens frequently?" I find it hard to believe that she would be accepting of this. Yeah Kathleen, she is a NY'er so I don't know how she gets her info on what is usual for the South.
As for Les Payne, he has been a racist (against whites) for years. This is his forte so I am not surprised.

Now, for another case of animal abuse. I got this from craigslist. Three teenage boys tortured and killed a puppy. Please sign the petition. They deserve to be prosecuted to the fullest by Texas' new animal cruelty law! Here is the cut and paste, but I left out the details for the tenderhearted. (It made me cry.)
"Please, fellow animal lovers, keep spreading the word. Overload the Petition Site with signatures for Toby. This CANNOT go unpunished. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/699548452 Please send to everyone you know. These monsters cannot get away with this. Toby's torture was more violent than was originally reported! I think even a sub-human would have a hard time comprehending how 3 KIDS could even THINK, let alone DO something so sadistic, so viciously torture, and mutilate this poor puppy. TOBEY WAS ONLY 5 MONTHS OLD!!!"
Posted by: TJill | September 04, 2007 at 09:25 PM
I signed this petition. This epidemic of animal cruelty makes me sick and Whoopi's comments did not sit well with me at all. On this first anniversary of Steve Irwin's death, animals are in more peril than ever. In his memory we all have to make sure that animals, domestic and wild, are treated with respect and compassion so the next generation will grow up loving animals and want to keep them safe.

Whoopi is a media seeking money grubbing boob. for her to use THAT awful situation as a get ratings quick story, says it all. another piece of trash.

also, i will get all of the girls on Toby's petition site, Tara. we will attack full force. poor baby....
Posted by: Darlene O'Sullivan | September 05, 2007 at 08:56 AM
Tears flowing after reading about Toby. Signed the petition and said next they will torture and kill humans. That's how it starts. They are scumbags and I wish they would rot in prison for the rest of their lives. No amount of rehab will ever change them. They are sub human monsters.
Posted by: Margot | September 05, 2007 at 09:32 AM
Ummmm... great for Whoopi to say that. However, Vick is NOT from the south!
Posted by: Susan Stahler | September 05, 2007 at 10:22 AM
Oh my gosh! Don't read the article about Toby. I'm bawling at work. I hope God took that little guy and took away his pain.
What is wrong with these people? My son gets upset when he finds a dead cricket... Grant it, he's only 5. However, don't these parents see the signs that these kids are messed up!
Posted by: Susan Stahler | September 05, 2007 at 10:34 AM
I signed the petition. What is wrong with this world? Still keeping the faith for VIVI and all the fur babies.

So do you Les Payne personally since you work at the same office? I was wondering because I think his editorial was light on the journalistic facts and heavy on the inconsistent logic. You seem to feel the same based on your description. I was just curious what his motivation was to write it.

I stumbled upon this site when I was reading about dog abuse. These beautiful creatures are going to be sent into gas chambers on September 7. Is there anything we can do? They have to be adopted in person....
http://www.shelterrescue.org/
I thought all dogs were euthenized – not gassed!
Posted by: Susan Stahler | September 05, 2007 at 03:44 PM
Darlene, I signed the petition about the boxer. I didn't look at the picture or I'd be done for the day. What is wrong with these people? What is the boxer's condition? I didn't see it mentioned or I hid that part with my hand as I was covering up the picture.
Kathleen, I got an e-mail from Troy of Best Friends today and it sounds like they are trying to help Cody. Did you hear anything?
On a happier note, today I took my first horseback riding lesson since I was a child. It was amazing.
Posted by: Susan Lorinsky | September 05, 2007 at 04:59 PM
Susan, the gas chamber is still used very widely-euthenasia means a good death, not the killing that goes on in the shelters by lethal injection or gas or worse. Unfortunately as long as people keep throwing away their animals, there will be kill shelters :(.
Posted by: Mila | September 05, 2007 at 06:26 PM
Hey Susan L,
So you are back in the saddle again!!! What fun for you!
Sadly, the boxer girl is gone...never to be hurt again.
Simply horrific-and it goes on and on and on. Most days I barely just function with what I hear and read on the abuses. I cannot imagine what the rescuers out in the field go through. These folks are the true hero.
Posted by: Mila | September 05, 2007 at 06:58 PM
Mila, it was fun. Horses are such majestic animals. To feel the body movement under you is so cool. The horse I rode, Dater, is my daughter's favorite as well as many of the riders there. She is so mellow and easy to guide but loves to jump and canter. Thank goodness there were no jumps in the ring or we'd have been off and running.
I'm so sorry to hear about the boxer girl. May she know only joy and love on the Rainbow Bridge.
Posted by: Susan Lorinsky | September 05, 2007 at 07:36 PM
MILA - So these animals are still taken to heaven humanely? I've been crying all day over these dogs. I wish I could save them all. It's so heartbreaking! I feel like no one understands my passion for these creatures, or my hopelessness.
Thanks!
Suz

Redcats is a group of online retailers such as Lane Bryant, Chadwicks, etc. One of their retailers, LaRedoute, which does business here in the US, is having a contest to win a designer bag made of PONY hair and leather. I can't think of anything more revolting. Please use the 'contact us' on any of the pages and send them an e-mail of protest. Thanks

Whoopi - what about Vick knowing that it is a violation of Federal Law to fight dogs - what about that? You think Vick is caught in a southern time warp or something where anything goes and like the south is not part of the U.S. or something - ah, give me a break - more lame excuses for Vick - gag a maggot!
Posted by: SusieQ | September 06, 2007 at 12:30 PM
I haven't been able to get on the site for awhile, but am just so sad...I wish I could slap Whoopi !!! ....this has nothing to do with a culture which was established years ago...it's got to do with the fact that a life is a life...bottom line !! No living creature should have to suffer such a fate...none !! especially such an innocent life which was put here out of love and just wanting to be loved - I don't understand our world anymore !! I hope Whoppi's career goes right down the tube and she can take all these other morons with her !!! I'm going to cuddle my little Genevieve closer tonight and give her the kisses these other poor babies should have had...God Bless all of you kind hearted people and God Bless all the dear fur babies !!!!

Patti - Thank you so much for your post. You said exactly what I feel as well.
As a born and bred Southerner also, her statement makes me want to slap her even more. I am tired of people like her who love to make Southerners look cruel, uneducated, accepting of things like this, etc. She does not know SHIT about the South. We are an area of the country with lots of love, kindness, and hospitality. I do not appreciate the picture people like Whoopi try to paint of our beautiful part of the USA.
I am a "Southern Belle" and I am damned proud of it! I was raised with this love, kindness, hospitality, and certainly not condoning dogfighting in any shape, fashion or form. So Whoopi Goldberg, would you PLEASE SHUT UP YOUR UNEDUCATED MOUTH ABOUT THE SOUTH!
Takes a good bit to get this Southern Belle angry, but this did it!

Susan Stahler -
I UNDERSTAND, DARLING!!!!!!! truly, i do!!! i cry everyday about the babies. BUT we are trying very hard. i have hooked up with girls across the U.S. not just Vivi girls but girls WITH POWER - WITH CONTACTS. the types that talk to the Senators and such about abuse, euthanasia, and BSL. these girls are writing the legislation to STOP this crap BEFORE it begins. it's a ton of workk and my Vivi girls and I have just begun getting organized with this. should anyone want to get involved, please let me know!!! we need help - no matter what it is. writing letters, emails, transport of the abused to foster/rescue - whatever. there is help needed everywhere and when it works, you cannot imagine the way your heart just sings. matter of fact, Team Vivi and rescues across the U.S. just saved a Mama and teeny baby Pitty from certain death yesterday!!! before i left my office, with just a FEW dollars, some transport arrangements, and working with transport women, these gorgeous, gorgeous (CAN YOU TELL I THINK THEY'RE GORGEOUS) 2 went from being PTS (by a means just as bad as gas or even worse) to hitching a ride from S.C. to their foster in N.H.!!! this was done within maybe 4-6 hours total. it's all about teamwork, trust, and love. and now Gypsy (Mama) and Sky (baby) will run and play as it should be. Let your sadness and frustration drive you to do something to STOP THIS. we can do it and we will be successful :) you can be penniless and still make a HUGE difference!!!
Posted by: Darlene O'Sullivan | September 07, 2007 at 01:25 PM
Darlene,
You and the Vivi girls are my heroes. I'd like to help more by e-mails, letters and maybe being a link on a transport. My daughter volunteers with a Rottie rescue and she said the woman who runs it has had dogs and puppies brought to her this way.
I read yesterday that a police dog died in AZ after his handler kept him in a hot car for hours. Where did the brains go! I hope this officer was suspended at the least.

Hey Kathleen...well put !!! How do we educate people that all life is precious ? The most precious gift we're given !!! ....we're supposed to take care of the meek, the weak, and the innocent...what's happened to our world ? Again, thank God for all the gentle hearts on this site....
I feel blessed just to be among you...
